FIRST BLOG ASSIGNMENT

1. Define the meaning of the terms data, information and knowledge according to Thomas Davenport's Information Hierarchy (1997).
a.data:Simple observations of states of the world
b.information:Data endowed with relevance and purpose
c.knowledge:Valuable information from the human mind, includes reflection,synthesis,context

2. What are the characteristics of the above terms?
a. data: easily structured, easily captured on machines, often quantified, easily transferred
b.information: requires unit of analysis, need consensus on meaning, hunman mediation necessary
c. knowledge: Hard to structure, difficulte to capture on machines, often tacit, hard to transfer

3. Give and example for each term mentioned above.
data: for example, there are 697units in the warehouse```
information: hard to transfer: think of palying "telephone" as a child, or the outcome of most office rumormills```
knowledge: somebody has reflected on the knowledge, added their own wisdom to it, and considered its larger impllications```

1. The reference is better added in the content as (author, year). You can get the author names and year from the URLs you found. The URLs can be listed at the bottom of your blog, under a header called "Reference". Proper reference, please.

2. It would be nice if you could write the answers properly in sentences that make up the paragraphs, so that it looks like an essay with a good flow of content.

Response to previous blog was not so satisfactory. I hope to see most of the blogs uploaded by end of Week 12 (27 Mar 2009), so that I could allocate the marks for your effort. You are not allowed to copy and paste from other sites without understanding the content and citing the source.

For this blog, the topic is on our latest lecture on IT and the Design of Work. Implementation of IT system helps in changing the way work is done, but there seems to be resistance from the human workers when the technology replaces the routine and mechanical works.

1. Why might a worker resist the implementation of a new technology? Give some examples to support the idea.

2. What are some of the possible consequences of asking a worker to use a computer or similar device in his or her job? Critically discuss this.

3. How can IT alter an individual’s work? How can a manager insure that the impact is positive rather than negative?

The IS Strategy Triangle (by 20 Feb 2009)

With experience of blogging in the first 2 assignments, by now it would be easier to get ideas on posting blogs to answer questions and giving reviews/opinions. Answer the questions below with proper elaboration. Do not re-write the questions; just give a proper header for each answer will do.

1. Why is it important for business strategy to drive organisational strategy and IS strategy? What might happen if business strategy was not the driver?

Emerging Technology (by 02 Feb 2009)

After an effort well shown in previous blogs, I would like to see some reviews/opinions on the most common question in managing strategic information systems.

Considering the organisational environments (internal, external and new work) and the technology environments (hardware, software and data trends), what current technologies do you predict will have the most impact on the way work is done? Why?
